ANGIOKERATOMA

ABOUT THE PROCEDURE

Angiokeratomas are small, benign vascular lesions that appear as dark red, blue, or purple spots on the skin. They are caused by dilated capillaries near the surface of the skin, often accompanied by a thickened, rough texture. While typically harmless and non-cancerous, angiokeratomas can sometimes be mistaken for other skin conditions or become irritated, bleed, or increase in size.

These lesions most commonly appear on the lower body — such as the thighs, groin, genital area, or feet — but may also occur elsewhere. Although treatment is not always medically necessary, many individuals choose to have them removed for aesthetic reasons or to reduce irritation and bleeding.

Angiokeratomas can be effectively treated using non-invasive or minimally invasive procedures depending on their size, location, and number. Options may include laser therapy, electrocautery, or excision, all aimed at removing the lesion while preserving surrounding healthy tissue.

  • Diagnosis: Clinical examination is essential to confirm the lesion is benign; a biopsy may be performed in uncertain cases.

  • Procedure Time: Typically 15–30 minutes, depending on the number of lesions.

  • Anaesthesia: Local anaesthetic may be used for comfort.

  • Recovery: Mild redness or scabbing may occur post-treatment, with full healing in 1–2 weeks.

  • Aftercare: Keep the area clean and dry; avoid friction until the skin heals.

  • Results: Treated areas usually heal well with minimal scarring; recurrence is uncommon but possible.
